The Community Assembly of Mablethorpe is located in a town that has existed for many centuries. It was granted its charter in 1253 authorising a market to be held every Thursday which continues today, selling locally produced meat, bread and cakes as well as clothing and other commodities.
Prehistoric settlements and barrows dating back to the Bronze Age, with finds of axes, Saxon beads to medieval pots all being recorded. Roman finds of scattered coins dating from 43 AD to 409 AD, as well as a Roman brooch and pottery give further evidence that the locality has been inhabited for some considerable time.
The town has featured in literature in the popular book Sons and Lovers by D H Lawrence, regarded as scandalous when published in 1913. The author Ted Lewis also used Mablethorpe as the setting for his crime novel GBH published in 1980. Regular visits by the author Alfred Tennyson during the 1830s also attest to the popularity of this seaside destination.
