About this Assembly
The Community Assembly of Bridport is located in Dorset, England. Its origins are Saxon which during the reign of King Alfred became one of the four most important settlements in Dorset.
It has a long history as a rope-making centre and the earliest official record of this industry dates from 1211, when King John ordered that Bridport make 'as many ropes for ships both large and small and as many cables as you can'. The raw materials, including flax and hemp, used to be grown in the surrounding countryside,
On the coast and within the town's boundary is West Bay, a small fishing harbour also known as Bridport Harbour. The coast at Bridport is part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site that covers a continuous 96 miles of coastline in Dorset and neighbouring east Devon. Chesil beach ends at West Bay.
