The Community Assembly of Wombwell is located in a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire in the British Isles. In the 2011 census, data for the town was split between Wombwell and small sections that crossed into Darfield (specifically the area south of Pitt Street, including Broomhill) and Stairfoot (specifically the area south of Aldham Crescent).
Wombwell is an ancient settlement recorded in the Domesday Book of 1806 as Wanbella . As it sits within the West Riding of Yorkshire, its name may have originally been Womba's Well, meaning ' well in a hollow' . A small map of Wombwell, dating back to November 1625, is held by Barnsley Museum. It was published when the ill-fated King Charles I had just come to the throne. This fragile document is labelled Mapp of Wombells Lands showing field boundaries, acreages and names including Stonelacke Meade, Barnetts Crofts and Ryefield .
More recently, two chapels standing in the main cemetery are both Grade II listed buildings: one has been transformed into a Peace Garden, the other, a Community Hub.
