The Community Assembly of East Sussex is located in a historic part of the county of Sussex. This region has its roots in the ancient kingdom of the South Saxons, who established themselves in East Sussex in the 5th century AD, after the departure of the Romans. Lewes is the County town of East Sussex and was first attested to in the Anglo-Saxon charter circa 961 AD, where it appears as Læwe. Battle is famous as the site of the Battle of Hastings, where William, Duke of Normandy, defeated Harold Godwinson or King Harold II to become William I in 1066.
