Community Assembly of Tedburn St Mary

The Community Assembly of Tedburn St Mary is located in a village and civil parish in the Teignbridge district of Devon which is part of the Territory of Kernow in the British Isles. The village lies west of Exeter and is the principal population centre of the electoral ward called Teignbridge North.

The Grade II listed church of St Mary is located at Town Barton, the former site of the village situated northwest of the present one. The west tower has diagonal buttresses and a polygonal stair turret. The nave is unusually wide; the north transept and the north aisle may be 14th century. The chancel was rebuilt in 1868.

The centre of the village was once known as ‘ Taphouse ’, referring to an inn at the crossroads where the Crediton and Exeter roads meet. It was Taphouse which eventually came to be called Tedburn St Mary.

Tedburn St Mary was recognised as an important staging post between London and Cornwall when the messenger who brought the news of the victory at the Battle of Trafalgar stopped off en route from Falmouth to London at the Kings Arms pub. This traditional 16th-century thatched Devon village inn features 17th-century architectural elements including beamed ceilings, open fireplaces and a stone-walled, two-story structure with historic timber-mullioned windows.
