About this Assembly

The Community Assembly of Plymouth Central is located in a port city in Devon which is part of the Territory of Kernow in the South West of the British Isles. Plymouth is located on Devon's south coast between the rivers Plym and Tamar, about 36 miles southwest of Exeter. Plymouth Central is, as one would expect, located in the centre of Plymouih.

Plymouth's history extends back to the Bronze Age, evolving from a trading post at Mount Batten (an 80-ft tall outcrop of rock on a 2000-ft peninsula ) in Plymouth Sound, which grew into the thriving market town of Sutton (the early name for Plymouth), which was formally re-named as Plymouth in 1439 when it was made a borough.

The settlement has played a significant role in English history, notably in 1588 when an English fleet based there defeated the Spanish Armada - although we are sure that it was the weather that defeated the Spanish Armada. In 1620 it was the departure point for the Pilgrim Fathers to the New World. During the English Civil War, it was held by the Parliamentarians and was besieged between 1642 and 1646. In 1690, a dockyard was established on the River Tamar for the Royal Navy, and Plymouth became an essential commercial shipping port throughout the Industrial Revolution.
