Community Assembly of Higher Efford

The Community Assembly of Higher Efford (anciently Eppeford or Elforde ) is situated on the site of a historic manor which was formerly known as the parish of Eggbuckland . Efford is locatied in Devon and is part of the Territory of Kernow in the British Isles. Today, Efford has been absorbed by the city of Plymouth to become a large eastern suburb of the city. It stands on high ground approximately 300 feet above the Laira Estuary of the River Plym, providing views over long distances: to the north across Dartmoor, to the east and south-east across the South Hams.

Efford was built on land known as The Wilds of Efford which consisted of largely unspoilt countryside and marsh land sloping down towards the River Plym. The ancient name Ebbing-ford (or Ebbford ) refers to a 17th-century (or earlier) name for Efford as it served as a crucial tidal crossing point where travellers could cross the river at ebb tide . Hence, the name, Ebb-Ford. Today much of the river has been reclaimed and built on. A deer park may have been attached to the original manor, as is suggested by the survival of the street name, Deer Park Drive .

Fort Efford was built in 1859 on the high ground of Efford on Military Road. The fort was built to defend the landward approaches to the Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport. It overlooks the Laira Estuary of the River Plym and was known as Palmerston Forts after the Prime Minister who championed the scheme. The fort was Grade II listed in 2003 and has been used for storage by the Showman's Guild for many years.

Efford was occupied by the American army during preparations for D-Day and this was memorialised by the naming of part of Efford as Little America . In 1945, an estate of American-supplied pre-fabricated houses were build and the streets have retained their original names including California Gardens and Oregon Way.
