About this Assembly
The Community Assembly of Bideford is located in an historic port town on the estuary of the River Torridge in the north of the County of Devon which is part of the Kernow Territory. The name derives from 'by the ford' as it was possible to wade across the river at that low point prior to a bridge being built.
Danes and Saxons fought over the area and the Manor of Bideford is mentioned in Domesday Book 1086. There were several landowners over the centuries including William the Conqueror's wife Matilda and various Earls and Barons of Gloucester. During the 1500s-1700s the Grenville family played a major role in developing the town, transforming it from a small fishing port to a port trading with the American colonies, particularly tobacco imports.
