About this Assembly
The Community Assembly of Bodmin (Cornish: Bosvena) is located in Cornwall which is part of the Kernow Territory. Bodmin is known locally as 'Sin City'.
There are two possible explanations for this and both relate to Bodmin Jail. The first explanation relates to the function of Bodmin Jail in that people from all parts of Kernow were incarcerated here but the more likely explanation is much more modern in that Bodmin Jail was later used as a night club and its reputation far exceeded its function.
Bodmin was the centre of three Cornish uprisings. The first was the Cornish Rebellion of 1497 when a Cornish army, led by Michael An Gof, a blacksmith from St. Keverne and Thomas Flamank, a lawyer from Bodmin, marched to Blackheath in London where they were eventually defeated by 10,000 men of the King's army under Baron Daubeny. Then, in the autumn of 1497 there was a second uprising and finally another in 1549, This was over the introduction of a new prayer book hence the name The Prayer Book Rebellion.
